Eric Decker

Founding Counsel & Executive Director

Eric Decker is the Founding Counsel and Executive Director of Horizon Defense Project.

His path to law was not direct. He spent several years in radio, on air as "Eric Thomas." He started his career in Rock and 'Hot talk' formats in Flint and Detroit before he moved to Washington DC to work for Westwood One as a traffic reporter. He returned home to Detroit to work at The Ticket, covering the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons. A self-described "law nerd," he left radio to go back to school. He graduated with both a political science and a law degree from Wayne State University.

Eric's first job out of law school was at Lakeshore Legal Aid, representing low-income clients across southeast Michigan — helping people avoid eviction, along with foreclosure and family law matters. He then spent nearly four years as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Wayne County, working violent felony cases in Michigan's Third Circuit. Often, similar facts led to different results depending on what the defense table could afford to do about it.

Not everyone can afford that.

Horizon Defense Project takes no retained clients. Eric built Horizon to put the trial experience he developed as a prosecutor on the other side of the docket, for clients who have no other way to reach it.

Eric lives on Detroit's east side with his dog, Charlie, and his two cats, Ember and Winston.
